/ 7 Scriptures to tell Your Kids
Throughout my teen years, if I was out on my own my parents would always say, “remember love, wise as a serpent, gentle as a dove.” In the context of my teenage world it simply meant, stay kind and gracious but PLEASE don’t be a victim! Looking back, I know why they made the verse in Matthew 10 my mantra - if anyone could walk themselves into the epicentre of trouble it was me. And whilst I was blindly walking myself in and out of danger 1 John 4:4 would occasionally spring to mind as I would comfort myself that “He that is in me is greater than he that is in the world.” Sheesh, as a Mum now I am really hoping my kids have inherited their Dads common sense! Anyway, here I am still alive to tell the tale…and looking back, I am glad my parents were brave enough to let me loose on the world, and I’m really glad they tooled me up with some Scriptures in the process. The truth is, as parents our years of influence are tiny and yet somehow, amongst all of the busyness and growing up and day to day figuring stuff out, we have a very small window to install a life time of truth. I know I won’t be there to face every situation with my kids, but I also know that God is, and whatever challenges they may face His love and His word brings comfort, restoration and freedom. There are so many incredible scriptures found in the Bible, but here are 7 I find myself using with my kids more and more!
For when they are feeling scared or out of their depth
So don’t worry, because I am with you.
Don’t be afraid, because I am your God.
I will make you strong and will help you.
I will support you with my right hand that saves you.
Isaiah 41: 10
When they are in need of empowerment
God did not give us a spirit that makes us afraid. He gave us a spirit of power and love and self-control.
2 Timothy 1: 7
To give them an understanding of their faith
For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son. God gave his Son so that whoever believes in him may not be lost, but have eternal life.
John 3: 16
For when they are feeling anything less than fully known and fully loved
You made my whole being.
You formed me in my mother’s body.
I praise you because you made me in an amazing
and wonderful way.
What you have done is wonderful.
I know this very well.
When they are needing their own breakthrough
Continue to ask, and God will give to you. Continue to search, and you will find. Continue to knock, and the door will open for you. Yes, everyone who continues asking will receive. He who continues searching will find. And he who continues knocking will have the door opened for him.
Matthew 7: 7-8
Because if they are feeling defeated they need to know just how great their God is
The Lord is the God who lives forever.
He created all the world.
He does not become tired or need to rest.
No one can understand how great his wisdom is.
The Lord gives strength to those who are tired.
He gives more power to those who are weak.
Even boys become tired and need to rest.
Even young men trip and fall.
But the people who trust the Lord will become strong again.
They will be able to rise up as an eagle in the sky.
They will run without needing rest.
They will walk without becoming tired.
Isaiah 40: 28-31
Because, in the words of Spiderman, with great power comes great responsibility
The Lord has told you what is good.
He has told you what he wants from you:
Do what is right to other people.
Love being kind to others.
And live humbly, trusting your God.
